TRAQ ATAQ

TRAQ ATAQ is a project I co-lead with NYC bassist and composer Sam Trapchak. Although we’ve known each other for 8 years or so, Sam and I started playing together regularly in fall 2021 when I returned back to NYC from Idaho. We started to develop repertoire and quickly realized that we shared many of the same views on the NYC jazz scene and it’s disconnection with popular culture, stemming from most jazz musicians unwillingness to embrace more recent popular songs. As many of you know, reinventing covers of popular songs was a fundamental practice of many jazz legends. The bulk of classic jazz repertoire are simply songs from Broadway musicals and films from the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s, collectively known as The Great American Song Book. With TRAQ ATAQ, we’ve expanded that repertoire to include songs by Soundgarden, The Cranberries, Matt Wilder, Hall and Oates, Whitney Houston, and many other artists of the 80’s and 90’s as well as our own originals which are heavily influenced by such artists. We follow only one important rule: our covers must be as good as or better than the original versions (at least in our estimation).

I’m really proud of how our new album sounds and we’ve been getting great audience response at our live shows. Many nights the whole audience is singing along to the songs that they grew up with!
